Air Horns – More Than Just a Loud Sound

Beyond the loud sound of air horns.

Horns are installed in cars as a device to warn others of their approach or presence. Typically, these are moderately loud, enough to be heard by pedestrians or other drivers. However, because of the greater danger posed by huge trucks and trains, these are often fitted with the much louder air horns. Emergency vehicles as ambulances and fire trucks also use air horns.

Today, though, even smaller vehicles sport air horns especially pick-ups and SUVs but also including cars and even motorcycles. Some drivers install air horns primarily for safety. Those who spend plenty of time on the roads can really use them when they see another driver up ahead who is weaving in and out of his lane. With a loud air horn, a sleepy or sleeping driver can surely be jolted awake. Or, if you have been cut off by an overtaking car, you can probably blast your air horn to indicate to the driver that he is driving dangerously, but be careful not to overdo it.

Other drivers, however, do not even use their air horns except when comparing sounds with their peers, or competing with them about who has the loudest, or the best design and style. They install air horns on their cars for the plain and simple reason that they like air horns, and perhaps for the bragging rights of having the best and loudest. They are not even displayed, with some installed under the hood or inside the trunk where they can only be seen when the car is parked and the hood or trunk is popped.

Some even collect several air horns, which need not be installed on their vehicles. You will probably find such collections in an honored place in their garages or in their man caves, where they are kept clean and shiny at all times.
